The seeded players had mixed results on Wednesday at the Family circle Cup being played this week in Charleston. Sabine Lisicki (15) and Laura Robson (16) both lost in three setters, while Caroline Wozniacki (2), Sam Stosur (3), Venus Williams (5), Lucie Safarova (6), Jelena Jankovic (9) and Julia Goerges (10) all made it through to the third round.
Wozniacki, the defending champion, sailed through her match against the 68th ranked Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa, hardly raising a sweat to take game, set and match 6-1 6-1 in exactly one hour on court. Her next opponent will be Andrea Petkovic.
Petkovic took a wild card to get into this tournament and played the American 136th ranked qualifier Vania King. King had taken out 14th seed Yaroslava Shvedova in three sets in the first round; while Petkovic had a straight sets win over another wild card, Taylor Townsend of America. Petkovic had to work really hard for an hour and thirty seven minutes to get past King and needed to recover breaks against her in both sets, with the final score being a straights sets 7-5 6- 6.
In the night match, Venus Williams had a very much tougher battle on her hands when she took on the up and coming 19 year old from Puerto Rico, Monica Puig, who is ranked at 104. Williams took the first set 6-2, but Puig came back at her in the second and fought for two minutes short of the hour to take the second set 7-5, to take the match to a decider. Williams finished off the third 6-3 in a match which lasted 2 hours 21 minutes, to move into the third round where she will meet Varvara Lepchenko.
