The final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart took place on Sunday afternoon between the first and second seeds – a tournament organiser’s dream finale on the last day of play. Top seed Maria Sharapova battled through three close three setters on her way to this final, while Li only lost eleven games on her route. The Russian led the head to head tally with eight wins to Li’s five, out of which Sharapova won two on clay and Li just one on this surface.
The Russian got two breaks early in the first set to lead 4-1, but Li got a break of her own and then held to trail 3-4 before Sharapova and Li both held for the Russian to serve out for the set at 5-4 and she made no mistake, so first set to the Russian 6-4. In the second set games went with serve until the 7th game when Sharapova broke and then held her serve to lead 5-3. She again did not err when she served for the match and title, to take the set 6-3 and walk away with the winner’s cheque of €100,806, 470 ranking points – and a magnificent white Porsche convertible.
