After rain disrupted play on Thursday, the tournament organisers were playing catch up as the third round matches and the quarters had to be completed on Friday. Venus was first on court when she took on another American, the 12th seeded Varvara Lepchenko, who won two tough three setters to get this far in the tournament. 5th seed Venus had a first round bye and a three setter in the second round. Venus took the first set quite comfortably at 6-2 and led 4-2 in the second set, but Lepchenko battled hard to take the next four games in a row to take the set 6-4. Venus then regrouped and ran through the decider 6-2 to book her place in the quarters against Madison keys.
Serena played the 99th ranked American qualifier, Mallory Burdette, in her third round match. Burdette had taken out 15th seed Sabine Lisicki in the second round and was playing some of her best tennis. She came out fighting against the top seed and managed to get four games before Serena closed out the set first 6-4. She then cruised through the second set 6-2 to set up a meeting with 6th seed Lucie Safarova.
