PinExt Rain and injuries hamper third round play at Charleston

Heavy rain throughout the day put a dampener on the Family Circle Cup tournament being played in Charleston this week. Play only got under way at 6:30pm with a much shortened schedule; and injuries took their toll as well.

2nd seed Caroline Wozniacki did not even get on court as her opponent, Andrea Petkovic, suffered yet another injury and pulled out before the match, giving the Dane a walkover into the quarters. 3rd seed Sam Stosur was able to start her match against the young 114th ranked Canadian qualifier Eugenie Bouchard, albeit with a heavily strapped calf. Bouchard took full advantage of Stosur’s limited movement and took the first set 6-1 and built a 2-0 lead in the second, before the Aussie had to retire. Bouchard will meet Jelena Jankovic in the quarters.

Jankovic, the 9th seed, battled through two very tough rounds of three nail biting sets each, to get this far in the tournament and has now won twelve of her last thirteen matches this season. Her third round opponent was the 148th ranked American qualifier, Jessica Pegula. The Serb took the first set to love, but Pegula settled in the second and managed to get four games before Jankovic took the set 6-4 and the match in an hour and four minutes on court.
