Rafael Nadal is likely to make two appearances in front of his passionate Catalan supporters on Thursday. Severe rain on Wednesday afternoon left the world number five kicking his heels at the Barcelona Open waiting for his fourth round match against Benoit Paire to begin.
The pair will take to the Pista Central at 10.30am local time and the winner will return in the afternoon to play the victor of Kei Nishikori’s (whose involvement in the doubles competition means it is possible that he will play three times in the day) encounter with Albert Ramos.
None of Nadal’s potential semi final opponents have started their fourth round matches. Fifth seeded Milos Canadian Raonic will play qualifier Ernest Gulbis, with the winner then taking on whoever triumphs out of the resurgent Tommy Robredo and third seed Tomas Berdych.
The only confirmed quarter final match up so far is the fourth seed Nicolas Almagro against the seventh seed Juan Monaco. In the other quarter final in that half of the draw, Thomaz Bellucci is waiting to play the winner of Martin Klizan and Philipp Kohlschreiber whose match was halted by the rain at 6-1 7-6 4-3.
