Rafa Nadal entered the quarterfinals at Barcelona 2013 ATP tournament, whilst Tommy Robredo beat Berdych. Milos Raonic also advanced.
A seven-time Barcelona title holder Nadal ousted thirteenth seed Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets to march into the quarterfinals at Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2013. The Spaniard was broken in the opening game of the match, yet he clawed back by 3-3 and a first set tie-break would eventually follow. Rafa prepared a set ball after clinching two consecutive mini-breaks and tucked it away for a one set lead. The following set was only a contest until 2-2 when the second seed started his four straight games run to complete his comfortable enough 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory.
In the next round he will face his unseeded compatriot Albert Ramos who sent home seed number six Kei Nishikori of Japan with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win.
Fifth seed Canadian Raonic made his way into the Barcelona quarterfinals by eliminating unseeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis. Raonic opened the third round encounter by breaking his opponent and doubled his one break lead by 5-2. He served out the set after averting one re-break ball. In the second set the Canadian’s serving was spotless, whilst Gulbis needed to save three break balls to make it to the tie-break. The Latvian eventually got hold of a set ball, but he failed to take advantage of his chance, allowing Raonic to seal the match with his match ball number one. End score: 6-2, 7-6 (6).
In-form Robredo was up to his task against third seed Czech player Tomas Berdych as he ultimately prevailed in the decider. In a closely fought first set Berdych claimed a break to go 5-3 up and seized the set after the subsequent hold to love. The unseeded Spaniard took the initiative in the following set and obtained a two break cushion by 5-1, yet his opponent responded excellently and made it 5-all. In the tie-break Robredo created three set balls before leveling the terms and forcing a deciding set. He broke Berdych immediately, while serving confidently throughout the set himself. The Czech was serving to stay in the tournament at 3-5, yet he blasted a shot into the net at 30-30 to offer his rival a match ball. Robredo wasted no time and hit a strong forehand past Berdych to confirm his 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph and set up a quarterfinal clash against Raonic.
