The first match in the night session on Friday was between Sabine Lisicki and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. 47th ranked Lisicki took out qualifier Nastasia Burnett in the first round and Jelena jankovic in the second, both in straight sets, while qualifier Mattek-Sands, the 104th ranked American, took out Yanina Wickmayer in the first round and 4th seed Sara Errani in the second, in three sets. The first set went to 4-4 before the American got the break to take the set 6-4. Mattek-Sands got an early break to lead 2-1 in the second set and only let Lisicki take one more game before she wrapped up the set 6-2 to move into the semis.
2nd seed Na Li against 5th seed Petra Kvitova was the last of the quarter final matches. Li had a bye in the first round and only lost three games in her second round match, while Kvitova had two long three setters against unseeded players on her route to the quarters. The head to head count was two all going into this match, with both players winning one and losing one match in 2011 and in 2012. In the first set Li broke first to go ahead 4-2 and she held on to her lead to take the set 6-3. With the momentum on her side of the net, she quickly ran up a 5-2 lead with her serve to come in the second, but Kvitova broke back, held and broke again to level at 5-5. Li was not ready to go home yet and she broke back to have another shot at serving out for the match, which she did to take the set 7-5 to take her place in the semis.
