Sara Errani, the Italian world number 7, started proceedings in the 2013 Federation Cup semi final being played this weekend on clay in the Italian city of Palermo against 25th ranked Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, the reigning champions. The first set was hard fought, with Errani getting just a single break to take the lead. She was much more in command in the second set, where she led 5-1 before Safarova held for 2-5, but she made no mistake in serving out for the set at 6-2, to take Italy into a 1-0 lead.
Next on court were 12th ranked Roberta Vinci for Italy and 8th ranked Petra Kvitova for the Czech Republic. Kvitova got the first break in the first set to lead 2-1 and held on to that lead until the sixth game when Vinci managed to break back for 3-3. The Italian went on to take set 6-4. In the second set Vinci got an immediate break and Kvitova continued to be forced into numerous errors by the Italian who allowed her just one game and raced away with the set 6-1 in an hour and thirty three minutes to give her team a 2-0 lead in the tie.
