Russian dominance of the women’s game continued on a rainy Friday in Miami which even caused a power outage, when the second round of the bottom half of the draw was completed. Maria Sharapova was at her dominant best as she swooped past a hapless Eugene Bouchard, the 123rd ranked wild card from Canada. Both players held their serve in the first three games of the match before Sharapova won eleven games on the trot to take game, set and match 6-2 6-0 in under an hour. Her next opponent is her compatriot, 29th seeded Elena Vesnina, who won in straight sets against the qualifier, Donna Vekic of Croatia, 6-4 6-2..
Nadia Petrova, the 11th seed, played against Jie Zheng of China, ranked at 44. Going into this match Petrova led the head to head stat 9-1 and she made no mistakes in making it 10-1. In just an hour and ten minutes on court the hard hitting Russian powered her way to a 6-3 6-1 victory, to move into the third round where she will meet 22nd seed, Jelena Jankovic.
Svetlana Kuznetsova continued her winning ways when she took out another Russian, 18th seeded Ekaterina Makarova. Now ranked at 45 and on a comeback following a 6 month injury break, Kuznetsova had to work hard for her 6-4 6-4 win against the very talented but often erratic Makarova, whose great serve just did not work for her in this match. Kuznetsova will play 12th seed Ana Ivanovic in her next match.
