The first of the bottom half of the draw quarter finals began with 3RD seeded Maria Sharapova taking on 8th seeded Sara Errani on Stadium Court at the Miami Open on Wednesday afternoon. This match was a marathon battle between the aggressive Russian’s heavy and precise groundies and the Italian’s very varied all court game of angled shots, spins and great net play – Errani is world number two in doubles and it really showed. Sharapova led 5-3 with two set points in the first set before Errani came back to level at 5-5 before Sharapova broke and held to take the set 7-5. The second set saw breaks on both sides of the net until the Italian led 5-4 with three set points, but the Russian was not giving up and saved them all to level at 5-5 and, yet again, break and hold to take the second set 7-5. The match lasted two and a half hours for Sharapova’s straight sets victory which sees her into the semis where she will meet Jelena Jankovic.
The second quarter final match also featured an Italian, this time Roberta Vinci, the tournament’s 15th seed, who played the Serbian 22nd seeded Jankovic. In this night match. Jankovic took the first set 6-4 but Vinci, the world number one in doubles, caught fire in the second and her very varied game started to unbalance the Serb. This set went to a very tense breaker which the Italian won 8-6 to take the match to a third set. Vinci continued to play well and led 2-0, but the Serb upped her game and allowed Vinci only one more game to take the set 6-3 and book her place in the semis.
