Even though the final score of 6-2 6-2 makes it look like 3rd seed Maria Sharapova had an easy day at the office on Monday at the Miami Open, she still had to fend off some inspired play by her opponent, Klara Zakopalova, the Czech 21st seed, and only closed out the match on her fifth match point. The match lasted and hour and twenty minutes during which the Russian hit six aces to two doubles and hit her groundies hard and with precision. Zakopalova was undone by poor serving, including eight double faults, as well as only converting 8 out of 19 break points to the Russian’s 11 out of 19. Sharapova will play Sara Errani next.
22nd seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic made hard work of her evening match against the Romanian 28th seed, Sorana Cirstea. Jankovic was on fire in the first set, blowing away Cirstea 6-0 in thirty two minutes, but the Roumanian fought back bravely in the second set to take a 3-1 lead. She then missed her chances to go 4-1 up when Jankovic once again upped her game. They then battled fiercely for a minute over an hour before the Serb finally took the set 6-4. Her opponent in the quarter finals will be Roberta Vinci.
