Svetlana Kuznetsova is continuing to win matches after a long layoff due to injury and, although not seeded at the Miami Open, she is still a strong threat to the other players in the draw. On Wednesday she played against Lourdes Dominguez Lino and won in straight sets 6-3 6-3. She was 5-1 up in the first set when she lost the plot and let Lino back to 5-3, but she managed to close out the set. Lino led 3-0 in the second set, but Kuznetsova won six games in a row to take game, set and match. Her next opponent will be Ekaterina Makarova.
Another veteran of the WTA tour, Italian Francesca Schiavone, took on the Slovak qualifier Jana Cepelova. This match turned out to be a real battle as the 90th ranked Cepelova came out fighting and took the first set 7-5 but the Italian, now ranked at 47, took the second set 6-4 to force a tie breaker. The third set was just as close as the first two, but Schiavone eventually took it 6-4 to close out the win in close to two and three quarter hours. She will play Angeliqw Kerber in the second round.
In another tough three setter, two young players – 19 year old Laura Robson of Britain and 21 year old Camila Giorgi of Italy – did battle for a minute over two hours. Robson eventually won with a score of 6-2 4-6 6-3 to book her place in the second round, where she will meet Alize Cornet.
