In an all American first round match, the wild card Madison Keys, ranked at 77, took on Melanie Oudin, who is ranked at 85. These two players fought for every point for two hours and four minutes as the advantage swung from one player to the other, with the eighteen year old Keys coming out on top 6-4 3-6 6-3 so set up a meeting with 7th seeded Aussie, Sam Stosur.

Another young American, 20 year old Christina McHale who is ranked at 48, played against the Bulgarian, Tsvetana Pironkova, ranked at 50. As these two players are close in the rankings, a tight match was expected, but the American took it in straight sets relatively easily, 6-3 6-4, for a match up against 13th seeded Russian, Maria Kirilenko.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is quickly making her way back up the rankings after a half year enforced injury break and is an ever present danger in any draw. Now ranked 46, in her first round match she played 65th ranked Andrea Hlavackova of Slovakia and made light work of her time on court, winning easily 63 6-1 in just an hour and eleven minutes so book a match with 18th seed Jelena Jankovic.
