Sara Errani, the top seed at the joint men’s and woman’s Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament being played in the resort city of Acapulco this week, continued her great run to defend her title and raise the trophy in victory once again when she defeated the second seed, Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, in an hour and thirty five minutes on court on Saturday. This was Errani’s 18th win and first title of the 2013 season, making her the front runner in the WTA win stakes so far this season.
Errani ran away with the first set to love in double quick time, not giving the often feisty and tenacious Suarez Navarro any say in the proceedings and then continuing to build a 2-0 lead in the second set. The Spaniard then started to find her range and she made a match of the remaining eight games, battling fiercely before succumbing to a 6-4 second set to Errani.
Spain did have some success in this tournament when its 4th seeded doubles duo of Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Arantxa Parra Santonja won the doubles title with a 6-4 7-6 (7-1) win over the Colombian pairing of Catalina Castano and Mariana Duque-Marino.
