Ana Ivanovic, the 11th seed at this year’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, continued with her very up and down season when she lost in the third round to Mona Barthel of Germany, the 24th seed, in an equally seesaw match. The German came out of the blocks on fire and took the first set with ease at 6-1, but Ivanovic came back at her in the second set, which she also took without much strain 6-3. In the deciding set, Barthel was back to her excellent form and did not allow Ivanovic a single game, taking the set to love. Her challenge for a place in the quarters will be against 7th seeded Aussie, Sam Stosur.
Top seed and world number 2 Victoria Azarenka played against the Belgian, Kirsten Flipkens, the tournament’s 28th seed. In a surprise first set, the Belgian’s crafty all court game caught Azarenka off guard and she took it 6-3 and then went on to level at 3-3 in the second set. That was when the Belarusian got her act together and she won the next three games on the trot to take the set 6-3. Azarenka was then on fire and continued to win the next six games as well, to take the decider to love. She will next face off against Ursula Radwanska in the fourth round.
