The injury hit Serbians did not have their stars, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, on their team in their World Group tie against the Slovak Republic which was played in Nis, Serbia and even a home advantage could not help them to victory. Slovakia eventually prevailed 3-2.
They did have world number 39, Bojana Jovanovski and 92nd ranked Vesna Dolonc, as well as Aleksandra Krunic and a rookie, Ivana Jorovic. The Slovak team had 15th ranked Dominka Cibulkova, 55th ranked Magdalena Rybarikova, number 58 Daniela Hantuchova and number 98 Jana Cepelova.
On day 1 of the tie, the very experienced Hantuchova defeated Jovanovski 6-2 7-5 to take a 1-0 lead, but Dolonc evened the tie when Cibulkova had to retire with a calf injury when leading 6-4 5-4.
In Sunday’s matches, Cepelova then took on Jovanovski in the third tie for what turned out to be a marathon, with a final score of 7-5 5-7 11-9 to the Slovakian, for a 2-1 lead. Hantuchova then played Dolonc in the fourth tie to try to get the win to take them into the semi finals, which she did easily, winning 6-3 6-2. Their next opponents will be Russia, who took out Japan earlier on Sunday.
