Agnieszka Radwanska, the 4th seed at the Qatar Total Open tournament in Doha, opened proceedings on Centre Court on Thursday afternoon against the 13th seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic. Radwanska had little hard work in the first set, which she easily took 6-1, but Ivanovic found her range in the second set and with both players giving their all, games went on serve all the way to a tie break, which Radwanska took 8-6 in a match which lasted an hour and a half. The Pole will face off against Caroline Wozniacki in the next round.
Also on Thursday, third seeded Russian Maria Sharapova, faced off against the 24th ranked and unseeded Czech Klara Zakopalova, who has been playing some of her best tennis of late. Sharapova had a bye in the first round and an easy straight sets win in the second round, while Zakopalova won on a retirement in the first round when leading 7-6 3-0; and then took out 16th seed Sloane Stephens in the second round in a thrilling three setter. In this match, the six foot two inch Russian had too much power for the five foot five inch Czech and ran out a 6-3 6-3 winner in just under an hour and a half. She will meet Sam Stosur in the quarters.
