Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli who was wild carded into the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship and who has not been playing at her very best of late had a fortuitous bit of luck when her opponent, new world number one Serena Williams, withdrew with a lower back injury, handing her a walk over into the quarters where she will meet Caroline Wozniacki.
6th seed Petra Kvitova faced off against 13th ranked but unseeded Ana Ivanovic in what turned out to be a real battle of the hard hitters. Ivanovic led the head to head stat 4-1 going into this match, but the Czech set out to remedy the situation. As has been the case for some time now, Ivanovic’s serve has been problematic with her ball toss going astray more often than not and this was the marked difference in this tussle, as Kvitova hit 8 aces to 6 double faults, while Ivanovic hit 2 aces and 4 doubles, but Kvitova got much better overall serve points than her opponent, as well as many more of her break points converted. The final score was a close 7-5 7-6 (7-1) with Kvitova winning in an hour and forty two minutes.
Italian 5th seed Sara Errani played against the Romanian Sorana Cirstea, ranked at 30. The first set lasted 45 minutes and all Errani needed was one break to take it 6-4. Cirstea started the second set but Errani got an immediate break before Cirstea got her own break. The Italian broke again in the 5th game and led 4-2, but Cirstea came back to 4-4 before Errani got a final break and served for the set at 6-4.
