The Serbs were quick to finish their job in Charleroi as their first round Davis Cup encounter against Belgium stopped being a contest after the Saturday’s doubles match. They will meet the winner of USA-Brazil pair next.
The home crowd was enjoying the first two sets of the opening clash as the best Belgian player David Goffin acquired a 2-0 lead against 39th-ranked Viktor Troicki. However, World No. 50 Goffin let the Serb back into the match after failing to serve out the match and letting Troicki grab the third set tie-break and complete his comeback with the first match ball to achieve a 1-6, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
There was no doubt World No. 1 Novak Djokovic would double the Serbs’ tally as he delivered a confident 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Olivier Rochus.
The Belgians were unable to threaten their opponents after falling 0-2 behind. Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Steve Darcis – David Bemelmans pair on Saturday in four sets with a 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 end result.
The Sunday’s clashes were merely formalities as both Djokovic and Troicki took a day off, whilst the Belgians brought some smiles to the spectator’s faces by collecting two consolation points, making the result 3-2 in the end. Goffin defeated Boris Pashanski with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 end score, while Darcis dealt with a doubles specialist Zimonjic in two sets, the result was 6-2, 6-4.
