Top seed Rafael Nadal beat Joao Souza of Brazil in straight sets 6-3 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Sao Paolo 2013.

This was the opening match for the Spaniard, who had a first round bye. Nadal managed to take his opponent’s serve once in each of the sets  to capture the match in one hour and 18 minutes.

Rafa, who lost in last week’s Vina del Mar final against the extremely well playing Horacio Zeballos, partnered up with David Nalbandian for the doubles here in Brazil, but decided to witdraw after the first encounter to rest his knees.

Nadal will square off against Carlos Berlocq of Argentina for a place in the semi-finals.

Argentine David Nalbandian is also through to the last 8 in the singles competition after defeating countryman Guido Pella 6-4 6-2.

Next up for the former world no.3 Nalbandian will be 2nd seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, who overcame Paul Capdeville of Chile 6-4 6-7 (3) 6-2.
