In the bottom half of the draw at the Pattaya Open played on Friday, 4th seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania went up against the qualifier Anastasia Sevastova, who is ranked at number 183. Sevastova had an easy straight sets win in the first round and then took out the 8th seed, Heather Watson of Great Britain. Cirstea had two relatively easy wins against unseeded players to make it to the quarters. Playing for a place in the semis, Cirstea had an easy day at the office, beating her opponent 6-3 6-1 in just a few minutes under an hour. She will next take on 2nd seed, Maria Kirilenko.
Kirilenko won her first round match relatively easily, but had a much harder struggle in the second round where she found herself a set down before regrouping to take the next two sets. Friday’s match quarter final match was against her compatriot, 7th seed Elena Vesnina, who had to win two three setters to make it this far in the tournament. The first set proved to be a marathon which went all the way to a tie breaker, which Kirilenko won 8-6. The second set was easier for the higher ranked Russian, who took it 6-3 in a match which lasted two hours and ten minutes, to take her place in the semis.
