Maria Kirilenko lost in the final of the 2012 Pattaya Open to Daniela Hantuchova in a marathon three and a quarter hour battle and she was determined not to let history repeat itself when she got to the final again in this year’s tournament. Playing 5th seed Sabine Lisicki, Kirilenko found herself one set and one game down, as the German took the first set 7-5 and won her opening game in the second set. This was the point when the Russian, who has been playing really well all through the end of the 2012 and the beginning of the 2012 seasons, got going and took eleven of the next thirteen games, to tie the game at set all after taking the second set easily 6-1. The decider was a real nail biter, going all the way to a tie breaker, which the Russian strolled through with the loss of only one point.
The doubles title went to the veteran Japanese, Kimiko Date-Krumm and her partner, Casey Dellacqua of Australia – who reached the ladies’ doubles final with Ashley Barty at the Australian Open this year. They handily defeated Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan and Alexandra Panova of Russia 6-3 6-2 in just fifty four minutes on court.
