The first four games went with serve, despite Zemlja having earned two break points in game four that he was unable to convert. After Roger took his serve in game 5 and then once more in the ninth game, there was no stopping him.
Federer outplayed Zemlja in set two, setting up a second round match against Thiemo de Bakker of Netherlands, who advanced after his opponet Mikhail Youzhny retired when trailing 3-6 7-6 (2) 4-1.
Also through to the next round is Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, who was was 6-0 6-7 (3) 4-0 up against Benoit Paire, when the Frenchman had to pull out because of an injury.
