Second-seeded Roger Federer and third seed Tomas Berdych advanced to Dubai 2013 quarterfinals in straight sets. Dmitry Tursunov was also successful in second round.
Second-seeded Federer won more easily than in the first round as he sent home Marcel Granollers in straight sets. The sixth game was decisive in the opening set – FedEx broke the unseeded Spaniard to love and went 4-2 up. He prepared a triple set ball at 5-4 and wasted no time to wrap the opener up. The set number two somewhat resembled the previous one – Federer grabbed a break in the fifth game and confirmed it with some difficulties. He squandered two match balls when Granollers was serving at 5-3, but his victory was imminent nonetheless. The fourth match ball did the trick for a five-time Dubai champion who progressed into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 final result.
Although Tobias Kamke had won in their only earlier encounter, third seed Berdych was up to the task in the second round match at Dubai Tennis Championships. The athletes put in a very unconvincing serving performance in the opener and gifted 19 break points in total, five of them were converted. The Czech thus seized his third break of the opener at 6-5 to move one set up. In the following set Berdych defended all three break balls he was facing, while stealing two of his opponent’s serves. In the end, he tucked away his first match ball and booked his quarterfinal ticket with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph.
Unseeded Frenchman Michael Llodra eliminated Tsonga in the opening round, but suffered a three-set defeat against Russian Tursunov in the best of 16. 92nd-ranked Tursunov prevented Llodra to consolidate his eighth-game break in the first set and was successful in the tie-break some minutes later. The World no. 67 Frenchman played the second set confidently and leveled the score after stealing the Russian’s serve on a couple of occasions. However, Tursunov prevailed in the decider by grabbing a late break and confirming it for a second round success. The score: 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3. The Russian is meeting Berdych next.
