It was a good day for Italy at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Thursday, as both Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci have progressed through to the semi finals. Errani played against the unseeded Russian Nadia Petrova, who is now number 12 on the WTA ranking list, while Errani is at number 7 and seeded 5th. In a match which ebbed and flowed from one player to the other for more than two and a half hours, Errani took the first tight set 6-4, but Petrova wiped her out with a bagel 6-0 second set to force a decider, which the Italian eventually took 6-3.
Facing Errani in the semis will be her countrywoman, doubles partner and good friend, Roberta Vinci, who is having a very good tournament this week. Ranked at 17 and unseeded, she had already taken out Svetlana Kuznetsova and 4th seed Angelique Kerber in the first two rounds before coming up against 7th seed Sam Stosur of Australia, in the quarters. Stosur’s famed serve did not make it to the court for this match, as the Italian bested her on every service stat and took the match 6-2 6-4 in just under one and a half hours on court.
