No.2 seed Juan Martin del Potro reached the ABN Amro Rotterdam Open second round after beating Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-3 6-4.
The Argentine, last year’s runner up, broke Monfils in his first service game, which proved to be enough to wrap up the first set. Despite the Frenchman earning himself a re-break point in game 9, he was unable to convert.
Del Potro remained in charge of the encounter throughout the second set and after taking Monfils’ serve once more in the eight game, he never looked back, booking a second round clash against Latvian qualifier Ernest Gulbis.
Gulbis overcame Robin Haase of Netherlands also in straight sets 6-2 6-1.
Elswehere, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland won his first round match against Belgian David Goffin without dropping a single game – end result: 6-0 6-0. Nieminen will take on German qualifier Matthias Bachinger, who eliminated 6th seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3 6-4.
