This year’s Choice Wireless V.I. Open Tennis Tournament will feature seven ATP ranked players – amongst them Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, who reached a career-high singles ranking of 12th and his doubles partner Jaymon Crabb of Australia, who competed three times at the Australian Open – together, they should be the highlight of the Doubles Competition. In addition, an absolute record of 115 players coming from the Virgin Islands, Caribbean, several U.S. Mainland states and Europe have registered to take part in this year’s tournament hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC), which will commence on February 15 and will last till the 18th.
“There is nothing better than the adrenalin rush during matches and the feel of competition,” says Hrbaty, who has beaten tennis greats like Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic throughout his career. “I decided to come to this tournament to help player Patrick Davidson. From time to time I try to help Pat and his coach, Jaymon Crabb, but I’ve never seen Pat play in a tournament. I wanted to see his habits and watch how he prepares, analyzes his opponents, handles stress and plays matches. I also asked Jaymon if he wanted to play doubles so we can all have a good time and fun on the court.”
The other ATP ranked players in the main draw include Denis Zivkovic, Philip Bester, Stefano Ianni and Terrell Celestine.
“As an avid VI tennis player, this tournament is an event we all enjoy and it’s very special to the local tennis players,” says Sharon Flamon, who is the president of the St. Thomas Racquet Club, located in Sub Base at the Doris E. Hodge Tennis Courts. “We have formed a unique bond with the various players from the states who participate every year. The different levels of tennis displayed are remarkable. It inspires our youth and junior tennis players with the opportunity to experience great players and learn what tennis can do for them academically in the future with college scholarships. This is also a great economic boost for the island with the exposure we receive.”
Matches will take place on courts at the STYC, the host location for Semi-Finals and Finals play, as well as at the Sugar Bay Beach Resort & Spa and Anchorage Condominiums. Matches will be officiated by USTA and International Tennis Federation head referee, Hector Figueroa, from Puerto Rico. The public is invited to come out and watch the action. A courtside BBQ lunch will be available for purchase on Monday February 18.
