Top seeded Tomas Berdych needed three sets against Jerzy Janowicz of Poland to book a place in Saturday’s semis in Marseille, eventually winning 6-3 6-7 (0) 6-3.
Both of the players showed off their big serves, the Czech producing 11 aces in comparison to Janowicz’s 16. However, as Berdych broke his opponent twice throughout the match withouth facing a single break point himself, he emerged victorious in the end.
Berdych will square off against Dmitry Tursunov of Russia next, who eliminated Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7) 1-6 7-5.
Tursunov, who had to qualify for the main draw this year, played some fantastic tennis in the previous rounds, beating Tipsarevic on the way.
“Playing in qualifying for the third tournament this year, I really didn’t expect this,”said the Russian after the match.
