Round 1 of the Aegon GB Pro-Series at the Welsh National Tennis Centre in Cardiff was a day of shocks. Both number one seed, Great Britain’s Josh Goodall, and the number two seed, Italy’s Victor Galovic, were beaten in strait sets.
Goodall, was overturned 6-3 7-6 (7) by fellow Brit, Richard Gabb, who is ranked 500 places below his rival. Galovic, failed to get going in his contest with local qualifier, Chris Lewis, who took an insurmountable 4-0 lead in the second set and claimed a comfortable victory 6-4 6-2 to open up both sides of the draw.
There were wins for GB trio Alexander Ward, Daniel Smethurst and Edward Corrie, who make up what remains of top 6 after 5th seed Timo Nieminen was defeated by James Marsalek.
The Aegon GB Pro-Series continues tomorrow with round 2 beginning at 10am.
