In third round play on Wednesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships being played this week in this Gulf Emirate, 3rd seed Agnieszka Radwanska took on the wild card from Kazakhstan, Yulia Putintseva, who is ranked at 101. Putintseva had taken out another wild card, Briton Laura Robson, in the first round in a very tough three setter. According to the book, this should have been a walk in the park for the Pole, but Putintseva really gave her a run for her money in the first set, drawing level at 5-5 before allowing Radwanska to take it 7-5. Two breaks in the second set saw Radwanska take the set 6-3 and move into the quarters.
8th seed Caroline Wozniacki easily beat Lucie Safarova in the first round to set up a meeting with Jie Zheng, the 44th ranked qualifier from China, who got past Ursula Radwanska in three sets in the first round. It took the Dane just fifty four minutes to steamroll Zheng 6-0 6-1 and book her place in the quarters.
