Russian Elena Vesnina won the Moorilla Hobart International on Saturday, when she defeated Mona Barthel of Germany to lift the trophy for her first ever WTA title.

Vesnina has qualified for six finals in her career since 2009, but had never won one. This victory over the tournament’s number 9 seed will send a message to players in her section of the draw in the Australian Open that she is playing very well and is a threat. Although Bartel ran up a 3-2 lead in the first set, Vesnina found her range in the windy conditions and began hitting really well, to take the next four games and the set at 6-3. She continued her good form to go 1-0 up in the second set. Bartel battled hard, but Vesnina never gave up her early break and took the second set 6-4 and the match in one hour twenty three minutes.

It was her serve that really worked well, but her experience and aggression also told in the final analysis.

The doubles trophy also went to first time WTA final winners. The Spanish pairing of Maria-Theresa Torro-Flor and Garbine Muguruza defeated Mandy Minella and Timea Babos in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 (7-5), after having a walk over in the second round against the number 2 seeds; and a very tough three setter in the semis.
