Third seeded Gilles Simon of France started the season on a positive note as he eliminated Colombian Alejandro Falla in the second round of the 2013 Brisbane International tournament, prevailing 7-6 (5) 7-6 (5).
After a hard fought first set, the Frenchman went up a break at the start of the second just to drop his serve and allow Falla back into the match. However, as the last year´s semi-finalist Simon took a quick 5-2 lead in the tiebreak, nothing could stop him from advancing into the quarter-final in 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Simon will play Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis next, who overcame 6th seeded German Florian Mayer 6-4 6-2 in front of the Australian crowd on Pat Rafter Arena. Baghdatis managed to take his opponent´s serve four times alltogether to book his place in the last 8.
Elsewhere, no.5 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan powered into the quarters after defeating Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3 6-3.
Nishikori´s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Dolgopolov and Nieminen.
