Five time Australian Open champion and this year’s third seed Serena Williams, took to the Rod Laver Arena in the second match on Thursday, to play the little known Spaniard, six foot tall, 19 year old Garbine Muguruza, a qualifier who is ranked at number 112.
Serena blanked Edina Gallovits-Hall 6-0 6-0 in the first round; while Muguruza took out Magdalena Rybarikova in three very tough sets, 4-6 6-1 14-12. This second round match and first meeting between the two went exactly according to plan for Serena, even though Muguruza was hitting the ball well and took the number 3 seed to deuce a number of times, but all to no avail, as Serena took this match 6-2 6-0 in just 75 minutes in the blistering heat. She will play unseeded Ayumi Morita of Japan in the third round.
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova has made a good start to the 2013 season after being off the tour for the second half of 2012 with an injury. Now ranked at 75, she took to the Margaret Court Arena to play Su-Wei Hsieh, the 26th seed from Taiwan. In the first set, the Russian ran up a 4-0 lead before Hsieh won a game and Kuznetsova allowed her only one more before taking the set 6-2 in just 23 minutes. The second set started with each player holding serve before Kuznetsova broke her opponent to go 2-1 up. Hsieh did not get another game, as Kuznetsova served out at 6-1 to move into the third round.
