No.7 seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria advanced into the second round of Brisbane International 2013 after beating American Denis Kudla 2-6 6-4 6-4.

Kudla dominated the first set also thanks to Melzer´s numerous unforced errors. However, the Austrian managed to re-group and after one hour and 46 minutes, he set up a next round clash against Belgian David Goffin, who overcame Australian wild card holder Matthew Ebden in two easy sets 6-2 6-2.

Elsewhere, Grigor Dimitrov eliminated American Brian Baker 6-3 7-6 (8) and will face second seeded Milos Raonic in round two.

Less lucky was no.8 seed Martin Klizan, who bowed out after losing to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan surprisingly easily in straight sets 6-1 6-2.
