It is good to see Svetlana Kuznetsova back on the WTA tour. The Russian is now ranked at 71 after not having played since just after Wimbledon in 2012, due to having been injured. She had to qualify for this Premier Level tournament and made it safely into the main draw, where she came up against the tough and hard hitting German Julia Goerges, ranked at 18, in the first round.
Even after such a long time out of the game, two time Grand Slam winner Kuznetsova is always a danger to many players – and she proved this yet again when she took out Goerges in three sets. The German took the first set 6-3, but Kuznetsova took the second by the same margin and then served out the decider also at 6-3. She will play Caroline Wozniacki in her second round match.
Na Li, seeded 4 and ranked at 7, took to the court to do battle with the young unsseded American Christina Mchale in her first match since winning the inaugural tournament in Shenzen last Saturday. This was one tough battle, as the two players were both hitting the ball and the score line was close all the way. In the first set, Li won the tie breaker 7-2 and only late in the second set did she get the break to take the set 7-5 in a match that lasted more than two hours. Li will take on the Japanese qualifier, Ayumi Morita, in the second round.
