Svetlana Kuznetsova is enjoying her return to top level tennis after being off the tour for six months due to a knee injury. Now ranked at 85, she had to qualify for the main draw and, after winning her three qualifiers, she dispensed with Julia Goerges in the first round and on Tuesday got past 7th seed Caroline Wozniacki in three tough sets. The first set went to a tie breaker which Kuznetsova won 7-4, but the second set was a reversal of the Russian’s fortunes, as the Dane took it easily at 6-1. In the decider Kuznetsova drew on all her many years of experience to turn things around and take the set 6-2. She will meet second seed, Angelique Kerber, in the quarters.
In yet another marathon match, Roberta Vinci of Italy finally beat Jelena Jankovic in a match which lasted almost four hours in searing heat. Jankovic took the first set 6-3, but the Italian upped her game when down 0-3 in the second set to eventually take the second set 6-4. In the decider Jankovic went 4-2 up before Vinci again came back to level, but the set went to a tie breaker, which the Italian took 7-4. Vinci will take on Aga Radwanska in the quarter finals.
