In the third match on Ken Rosewall Arena in the Apia International Sydney which got underway on Sunday, the 14th ranked Russian Maria Krirlenko took on 116th ranked wildcard Olivia Rogowska of Australia in a contest between two unseeded players. Kirilenko eventually came through what became quite a tricky first set, winning it 7-5; and then taking the second set 6-2 in a match that lasted just over an hour and a half. In the next round, Kirilenko will face the winner of the match between the 3rd seed, Sara Errani, and the qualifier, Karolina Pliskova.
Next up on the same court were another Russian, this time Ekaterina Makarova and the American Varvara Lepchenko, also both unseeded. This match went all the way to three sets, with the very talented by often erratic leftie Makarova taking the first 6-4. In the second set, Lepchenko prevailed, taking it 6-4, to take this contest into a third set. Makarova stepped up her game, while Lepchenko’s disintegrated, to allow the Russian to take it 6-1 and move into the second round, where she will take on Dominka Cibulkova, conqueror or Petra Kvitova earlier in the day.
