The American qualifier Madison Keys, had a charmed run through to the semi finals at the Apia International Sydney, but it all came to an end at the hands of 4th seed Na Li, on Wednesday. Keys, just 17 years old and world number 135, played the first set very confidently against the world number 6 and got the break to take this set 6-4. Li still battled in the second set, which went all the way to a tie breaker, which the Chinese eventually won 7-2, setting up a deciding set. Even though Keys fought bravely, Li’s superior power and experience saw her through and she took the third set 6-2 in a game which lasted two hours and twenty minutes. Li will face Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi finals.
In the last of the quarter finals, the qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia faced Angelique Kerber of Germany, the tournament’s 2nd seed. Kerber took the first set with relative ease, 6-3, but Kuznetsova, winner of two Grand Slams in her long career, made a real fight of things, taking the set to five all before Kerber got the essential break to go 6-5 ahead and finish things off at 7-5 in just under an hour and a half on court. Kerber will meet Dominka Cibulkova, conqueror of third seed Sara Errani, in the semi finals.
