Two times Chennai Open champion Marin Cilic of Croatia went out of this year’s tournament after the Frenchman Benoit Paire eliminated him in three sets 6-4 1-6 7-5.
After both players traded one break each at the start of the first set, Paire managed to take his opponent’s serve for the second time to wrap up the set.
However, Cilic came storming back and raced to take the second set to take the match into a decider.
The Croat carried the momentum into set three as he broke Paire in the opening game, but he handed back the advantage to allow the Frenchman to level the score at 2-2. The deciding moment came in the 12th game, when Cilic couldn’t hold serve and Paire emerged victorious, booking a place in the semi-final.
In another quarter-final encounter, Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene upset world no.17 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, beating him in straight sets 6-2 7-6 (6).
Bedene outplayed Wawrinka in set one and despite the Swiss fighting back in the second, the Slovenian player kept his composure and wrapped up a superb win.
