Mona Barthel of Germany, ranked at 39 and seeded 9th at the Moorilla Hobart International tournament being played this week in Tasmania, beat the heat and her opponent Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa, in the second round on Tuesday.

This match was fiercely fought by both players and the score line reflects this. Barthel came out on top in both sets, but the first went to a tie breaker, which she won 7-3; and the second was almost as close, with the German claiming it at 7-5 to book her place in the quarter finals.

Russian Elena Vesnina caused an upset when she took out the tournament’s 4th seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. Shvedova took the first set with one break of serve 6-4, but Vesnina, who has been rapidly improving of late, took the second set 6-2, thereby forcing a deciding set, which she took easily 6-1 to move confidently into the quarters.

Yet another turn up for the books was the pretty easy victory of American Lauren Davis over the tournament’s second seed Romanian Sorana Cirstea. Qualifier Davis, just 19 years old and ranked at 91 after only one year on the tour, took on the much higher ranked Cirstea in blistering heat and rocked her opponent off the court very handily in straight sets, 6-1 6-3. Next up for Davis in the quarter finals round is another American, 8th seed Sloane Stephens, who took out Laura Robson and Simona Halep in her first two rounds.
