Agnieszka Radwanska, the WTA’s fourth ranked player and the Auckland ASB Classic’s top seed, has brought her excellent form from the 2012 season straight into the 2013 season. In her first tournament of the year, she did not lose a set on her way to taking the title. Her toughest test this week was in her semi final match, where she was taken to two tie breaker set by the American, Jamie Hampton.

In the final, played on Saturday, she faced off against the Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, who is ranked as 23 and was this tournament’s third seed. Going into the final with one win each against each other, it was the Pole who took control and got the first break in each set, to take game, set and match 6-4 6-4 in just over one and a half hours. Radwanska also had better statistics in every aspect of the tie, except for break point conversion, where they both had exactly the same numbers.

The doubles title went to the unseeded pair of Cara Black and Anastasia Rodionova. They beat the tournament’s number one seeds, Julia Goergers and Yaroslava Shvedova in three sets, 2-6 6-2 1-5. It is good to see one of the WTA’s best doubles players, Cara Black, back on the tour after having taken a maternity break.
