Even though home favourite Tsvetana Pironkova lost two of her matches in Group B in the round robin stage of the year end championship in Sofia – to Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko and won only one, against Jie Zheng – she made it into the semi final stage, courtesy of Kirilenko having had to withdraw after losing to Petrova with a won one, lost one record. Games went with serve until the 7th game when Caroline Wozniacki broke, but Pironkova broke straight back to level at 4-4. Wozniacki held for 5-4, challenging Pironkova to hold her serve to stay in the set. After many deuces and advantages, Wozniacki got the break to take the set 6-4. In the second set Wozniacki ran up a 5-0 lead before Pironkova got on the scoreboard, but had no trouble in serving out the set at 6-1.
The second semi was between Nadia Petrova and Roberta Vinci. Petrova had a clean 3-0 record, having beaten Maria Kirilenko, Jie Zheng and Pironkova, while Vinci won against Su-Wei Hsieh and Daniela Hantuchova, but lost to Wozniacki in Group A. Vinci served first and there was nothing to separate the two, as games went with serve all the way to the tie breaker, which was equally close, but Vinci eventually won it 10-8 in 70 minutes – longer than some easy two set games take. Petrova started the second set and got an early break to lead 3-1, after which she never let Vinci get into her stride, taking the set 6-1 in half an hour. In the decider Vinci served first and, as in the first set, games went with serve until the 9th game, when Petrova broke the Vinci serve to go 5-4 ahead, with a chance to serve out for the match. After a prolonged game which went to deuce and advantage a few times, Petrova finally managed to wrap up the set at 6-4, ensuring her of her place in the final against Caroline Wozniacki.
