Caroline Wozniacki, the top seed in the year end Tournament of Championships being held in Sofia this week, took on Daniela Hantuchova, the 7th seed, in a confident mood with two groups wins and a confirmed place in the semi finals under her belt. The Dane came back from a set down against the Slovak to prevail 3-6 7-6 (4) 6-4.
Both players held their serves until the 5th game, when Hantuchova took Wozniacki’s serve and subsequently managed to consolidate the break for a 4-2 lead. The Slovak player kept her composure and served out the set with a hold to love to take the lead in the match.
It was the Dane who struck first in set two and after breaking Hantuchova and holding her own serve, she went 3-1 up. However, world no.32 Hantuchova fought her way back into the set and not only did she force a tiebreak, but she managed to take it 7-4, forcing a decider.
The Dane started the deciding set and games went with serve, with a very long and hard fought eighth game, before Wozniacki broke in the ninth game and served out the set at 6-4 in an exciting game which ebbed and flowed for two and three quarter hours.
