With two wins (against Jie Zheng and Maria Kirilenko) under her belt, Nadia Petrova took to the court to try to make it three in a row against the home favourite Tsvetana Pironkova, who had one win and one loss (to Jie Zheng and Maria Kirilenko respectively) to her name.
In a see-saw three setter, Petrova achieved what she had set out to do and equalled Caroline Wozniacki’s three straight wins in Group A to top Group B. Pironkova took the first tightly fought set 7-5 after the first ten games went with serve before she got the break, but Petrova mustered all her considerable experience and power play to turn things around, taking the second set 6-1 and the decider 6-3.
Sofia Arvidsson came in as the first alternate of the tournament when Maria Kirilenko withdrew after her epic match against Petrova on Thursday. She took to the court to play against Jie Zheng in the remaining round robin match in Group B, but the Chinese player retired with the Swede 5-1 up in the first set.
