Daniela Hantuchova’s losing record in the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions in Sofia continued on Friday when she lost her third round robin match to Su-Wei Hsieh to leave her bottom of Group A with no wins.
Having already lost to Caroline Wozniacki and Roberta Vinci, she had no chance of qualifying for the semi finals, but then neither did the Taiwanese player, as she had also lost her first two matches, also to Caroline Wozniacki and Roberta Vinci respectively. This match therefore became a match of honour, in that both players wanted to win at least one match in the competition.
This was the epitome of a see-saw match, with Hsieh easily taking the first set 6-1. Hantuchova fought back to take the second set without the loss of a game, at 6-0, while the deciding set was the most competitive, going to 6-4 with only one break of service needed for Hsieh to take game, set and match. The semi final of this group which is to be played on Saturday will be between the two players who had the most wins – Wozniacki, who won all three of her round robin matches (against Vinci, Hsieh and Hantuchova) and Vinci, who won two of her matches (against Hsieh and Hantuchova) and lost one (to Wozniacki).
