Last on court on Wednesday in the second day of play at the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions in Sofia were top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and no.4 seed Roberta Vinci of Italy, with the Dane prevailing in straight sets 6-3 6-1.
Both playing in Group A, they had easy victories in their openers, with Wozniacki taking out Hsieh Su-Wei 6-2 6-2 and Vinci besting Daniela Hantuchova 6-1 6-2.
Wozniacki was the first to get a break in the first set, in the sixth game to lead 4-2 and then 5-2. Vinci had to hold her serve to stay in the set, which she did, to trail 3-5, but Wozniacki held to take the set 6-3. Vinci started the second set and held, but that was the last game she won, as Wozniacki did not let her get into her stride and took the next five games in a row for a 6-1 set. Having won both her first two matches in straight sets, Wozniacki leads Group A and is headed for the next round, while Vinci has won one, lost one, so she still has a chance to qualify after the completion of Thursday’s matches involving Hsieh and Hantuchova, who both lost their opening matches.
