PinExt Tsonga beats Youzhny to reach China Open SFs, Mayer ousts Zhang

Florian Mayer sent Zhang Ze back down to earth, defeating the Chinese in straight sets 6-3 6-4. Full of confidence after his huge win over Richard Gasquet, Zhang was never in control. Mayer had already dispatched of one giant killer in Marius Copil in the last round but did not allow his opponent this time round to strike the first blow. A sloppy service game saw Mayer break to love for a 4-2 lead and it would be enough for the set, but not before Zhang gave him a major scare as he earned five break points. None would be taken and the German would move into a one set lead.

At the fourth time of asking, Zhang would break for the first time in the match for a 4-2 lead to give the home crowd a boost but that would be it for the world ranked 165. Mayer would crack the Zhang serve and break straight back on his way to tying up the set. A lengthy service game would at 4-4 would also go Mayer’s way as he took the last four games of the match for the victory. Like the first set, Zhang would get break point opportunities to pull it back on serve but again would fail to convert (Zhang just 1/11 for the match on break points). An efficient Mayer would take the first match point available to book a semi final with Novak Djokovic.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had little trouble with Mikhail Youzhny, not being broke once his way to a straight forward 6-3 6-2 victory over the Russian. Youzhny would not be able to deal with Tsonga’s first serve, winning just two points on it in a first set (and seven overall) where he could not carve out a break point. The mounting pressure would finally get to Youzhny who would drop his serve at the first possible sign of danger, being broken to 15 to fall 3-5 behind. Tsonga then emphatically served out next game to move to a set away from the semi finals.

The second set would be much of the same with solid serving helping Tsonga along after an early break for *2-1, with five aces helping his cause. At *3-2, Tsonga would face break points for the first time in the match but reeled off four straight points to hold. The inability to break clearly affected Youzhny as he was broken to love straight after to give Tsonga the insurance break. He would not need it, serving out to 30 to take his place in the semi final where he faces Feliciano Lopez.
