5th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets 6-2 7-6 (2) and reached the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters 2012.

In a match that saw several breaks of serve, Baghdatis was the first to take his opponent’s serve in the opening game, just to hand back the advantage and the score was levelled at 1-1. Tsonga changed gears and with some heavy groundstrokes, especially from the forehand side, he broke Baghdatis a couple more times to take the first set 6-2.

Both players dropped their serves twice  at the beginning of set two as the score was poised at 4-4. Baghdatis, who defeated Raonic in the previous round, held on tight this time, forcing a tiebreak. Nevertheless, Tsonga proved to be on top of his game in the ‘breaker’ and with some unexpected unforced errors from the Cypriot, he took it 7-2, booking his place in the last 8 of this year’s tournament.

Tsonga will play the winner of the match between Berdych and Querrey next.
