Virginie Razzano of France, now ranked at 170 on the WTA players’ list (with a career high of 16 in 2009), faced 9th ranked and top seeded Aussie Sam Stosur, in the second round of the HP Open being played this week in Osaka, Japan. The 29 year old Razzano, well known for being a dangerous player on the tour with great wins over top players all through her long career – including beating Serena William in this year’s French Open – came out firing on all cylinders, while her opponent on the other side of the net could do nothing right. The feisty Frenchwoman took the first set 6-1, but Stosur found her rhythm in the second and third sets, to take them 6-2 6-4. She will next face Jamie Hampton of the United States in the quarters.
Kai-Chen Chang of Taiwan followed up her great win over the tournament’s third seed Christina Mchale of the United States, to also take out Casey Dellacqua of Australia in the second round to book her place in the quarters. The first set of this match was a tight affair which went all the way to a tie breaker, which Chang won 7-4. She then had an easier time in the second set and took it 6-3.
Jamie Hampton, the 22 year old American number 7 ranked 80 on the WTA list, was up against the wild carded 35 year old veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, ranked at 133, who lifted the winner’s trophy at this tournament last year. This year she battled hard against Hampton, who came back to take this match 7-5 7-5 after trailing by two breaks in the first set and match point down in the second.
