Maria Sharapova set up a WTA Championships 2012 final against Serena Williams after she beat world no.1 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 6-4 6-2 in today’s semifinal.

The players traded one break of serve each to set the score at 2-2 at the beginning of the first set. It was the Russian who struck once more in the following game and after she took Azarenka’s serve for the second time, she never looked back, giving herself a one set lead in the match.

Sharapova carried the momentum into the start of the second set, storming to a 4-0 lead with two breaks of serve. After Azarenka managed to get on a scoreboard to reduce the Russian’s lead, the longest game of the encounter followed, with Maria coming out on top and the Belarusian player’s chances to prevail were slowly but surely diminishing. A couple of games later, the Roland Garros 2012 champion Sharapova secured her place in Sunday’s final.

Sharapova will play Serena Williams for the title.
